whats a genre?

from whats a genre? by J.M.V.D. Kieft

about

the simple answer is do wop, but its really 4 genres, the others being punk, and proto-disco soul

rock and roll was originally a term used as an alternate for rhythm and blues which was a term used to replace race music referring to anything made by black people, in many cases country songs by white artists were really just vaguely polka and Celtic influenced versions of this very music as well. for instance western swing took the spanish, bohemian, and british folk music elements and mixed them with blues, swing, jazz and ragtime. and this variant would eventually evolve into rockabilly by minimizing the large orchestra of fiddles, do-bros, banjos, mandolins, accordians, trombones, bugles, and saxophones, and focusing on an uptempo back-beat and blues chord progression. in the 50s the segregationist mass media decided that when white artists played rnb\rock i would be marketed as rock while the black rnb\rock was marketed as rnb, then during the 60s rnb evolved into soul while rock evolved into heavy metal, and separately from both, pop music slowly incorperated elements of both.
then in the 70s a million subgenres came into existence and all of them were cataloged and had to have specific attributes in order to fit . and rock and rnb only hybridized 3 times after that, first to create psychedelic soul which evolved into funk, and soft soul [and jazz fusion counts a little], the next time to create disco rock which had a negative reaction against it and it died out but influenced post-punk, new wave, euro-disco and house. the third time they hybridized was to create the groovier side of alternative rock which includes many sub genres such as the much reviled nu metal genre. and the mostly european alternative dance. other anecdotes are merely thus,
and the evolution of hip hop has its own separate evolution which includes dub reggae, krautrock and electronic body music being used to replaced most of the disco elements then having rock music and r&b music being mixed into it at various times as well as what ever else the dj feels like adding, causing it to be a very volatile genre with many horrible examples and many generic examples
